Bognanco Fonti owes its fame to an almost accidental discovery in 1863, which forever transformed this hamlet in Val Bognanco.
A discovery mistaken for brandy
According to tradition, in 1863 a young girl discovered Bognanco’s mineral waters by drinking directly from the spring, struck by the characteristic tingling sensation that made her mistake the water for brandy. After six years of chemical analyses, the therapeutic properties of the waters were officially recognised, setting in motion a development that, between the two world wars, would make Bognanco an important holiday resort.
The height of the Belle Époque
The first thirty years of the twentieth century marked the peak of prosperity for Bognanco Fonti, thanks to the construction of a spa complex and numerous hotels that welcomed visitors from all over Italy. The three historic springs, recognised internationally, are Fonte Ausonia, Fonte San Lorenzo and Fonte Gaudenziana. In 1929, Bognanco’s thermal water was the first in Italy to be bottled using a fully automated process, a technological achievement for the time.
A renewed spa centre
Between 2005 and 2011, the spa facilities currently in the area were completely refurbished, restoring Bognanco Fonti as a benchmark for wellbeing in the Ossola Valley, now managed by the Óniro Terme di Bognanco centre.

The hamlet lies further up Val Bognanco, among springs and trails leading towards the upper valley. For opening times and access arrangements, please refer to the official website of the Terme di Bognanco.
After a day of spa relaxation, heading down to the valley floor for a tasting among the vineyards is a natural way to round off the visit.
An atmosphere of times gone by
Walking around Bognanco Fonti today means immersing yourself in an atmosphere suspended in time, among Art Nouveau buildings that tell the story of the golden age of spa tourism and a slower pace of life than on the valley floor: an experience that particularly appeals to those seeking tourism away from the busiest destinations.
A future between tradition and modern wellbeing
The modern facilities of the Óniro centre represent a successful attempt to combine nineteenth-century spa tradition with the needs of contemporary wellbeing, offering treatments and programmes that go far beyond traditional spa therapy, in a natural setting that remains Bognanco Fonti’s true added value.
A future for wellness tourism
Today, the revival of Bognanco Fonti also depends on more effective communication aimed at a younger audience interested in wellbeing, but also in sustainability and the authenticity of the experience: a challenge that the Óniro centre is tackling through targeted investments in the facility and the services offered.
One final note: even simply walking through the streets of Bognanco Fonti, without necessarily booking spa treatments, allows you to breathe in the unique atmosphere of this small holiday resort from times gone by.
